Zombie Hand Video Part 1
This is the first in a two part series showing me pencil, ink, and color a zombie’s hand. By the end of this video you’ll see the piece progress from pencils, to inks, to sketchy value work (in preparation for the spot color added in the next video).

NICE! Gonna give me some competition in the art-related videocast arena, huh? Bring it on!
I subscribed through iTunes, btw.

Heh. I had an older blog that housed a lot of videos, but none in a podcast feed enclosure. This was a pretty fun experiment, though!

Love these videos man. I learned a lot about digital inking from watching them.
Cheers and keep them coming!

I hope they continue to get more informative. So far, I feel like I’ve not been terribly helpful.

Very nice and Hogarthy, although I think the thumb’s a bit misplaced. What’s the music? GSYBE or something?
Sep 23rd, 2007 #
Definitely agree on the thumb. It has a joint too many. I get nervous when I know I’m being recorded!
I’ll fix it before it hits the client.
The music is GSYBE, indeed.

Nicely done… I noticed you finally got that missing fingernail in… lawl… What’s your program of choice? It’s on PC, but my eyes are unable to make out the app name. Thanks.

It’s Manga Studio EX 3.0. I have a Mac and generally prefer to use it, but there’s no Universal Binary till version 4.0. It’s out in Japan for Windows, but not here and not for Mac - yet. Gah.
If you download the demo from eFrontier, make sure to turn IN, OUT, and CORRECTION way off. They butcher lines, sterilizing them terribly.

Cool video! The hand has a Dynamic Hands look to it. Very nice indeed, and I loved the music. Been awhile since I have listened to GSYBE. Have to break open the vinyl today.

I always try to focus on fluidity and motion, so the Dynamic Hands compliment is well received. I actually haven’t read that book, but I have flipped through Drawing the Human Figure a few times.

Manga Studio EX… what do you think of Painter? I’ve used it for a while, and it has some fantastic brush effects, but for me it’s a bit slow…
Sep 29th, 2007 #
I used to ink solely in Painter. I got used to Manga Studio’s speed and stability pretty quickly, though. You can create a perfectly adequate inking brush in Painter, though.

I downloaded and tried out Manga Studio… you’re right! The pencil and ink functions are second to none! Very fast and responsive. I think I’m going to buy this now… The only real problem (at least until I follow a tutorial, or read some kind of manual) are those horrific palettes. Back to screen clutter, a la Painter. Oh, well, guess you can’t have everything. ;)

Email me - I want to share brush settings and the like with ya.

Great video. Manga Studio looks great. The ability to rotate the page is nice, huh?
Can’t wait to see the shading in Part II.

Ray, I found one major problem with Manga Studio EX. It looks like I can’t open the files I created using the demo version with my paid version of Manga Studio EX. Major, major bummer (after I spent 4 days creating some cool illustrations)… I was upset enough to write to eFrontier to see if they can help out on this… Grrr!
Oct 8th, 2007 #
eFrontier says they can’t help on the file issue, but I’m working my way up the corporate chain… I’m trying to see if these guys will simply take my files and convert them for me, since they will not acknowledge I purchased their software (I even registered it) and I’m not trying to pull anything funny. I’d sure hate to redo those drawings… lots of time would be wasted. Man!

You know what, send me a zip of the files (or a location to download them). I work with MS a ton and make the program do a lot of things it wasn’t intended to. Maybe I can get a workaround for you.

you have officially made me feel like a nooba nd I have so many questions. This program looks very nice as well.
Oct 16th, 2007 #
What questions do you have, Cory? I try to be as open as possible.
Oct 18th, 2007 #
Dick, I have the same issue. Please drop me a line if you have any success.

I contacted e-Frontier and they won’t/are unable do anything about converting the locked files. However, I’m requesting a contact for the Japanese company that wrote the software originally (e-Frontier just “Americanized” the software for this other company). I’ll let you guys know what happens. They’re not very pro-customer, these guys, but I’m trying to get some results.

As I posted in another of Ray’s threads… the buck stopped.
The people at eFrontier were not very responsive, but they did finally respond. They can’t help, and the Japanese company whose product Manga Studio EX sprang from will not help either. Damn poor excuses from these folks also.

Where’s the second part?? I’ve been pissing my pants waiting to see what spot you’re going to put on it!

I’m embarrassed to say my PC ate it! That’s what I get for doing my video editing off my Mac.

i see that you noticed the extra segment of the thumb. i was also thinking that the “standard” zombie usually has long (and nasty) fingernails. great work though! maybe you could post the final version? i’d love to see how this one ended up!
Mar 21st, 2008 #
I did redo the thumb. The finished version is floating around here somewhere - the client ended up disappearing on me, so I never made it a priority to post.
