Now for something completely different…

Posted February 7th, 2009 in Illustration.

I’ve been trying my hand at value/mass drawing a bit. I want to do a series of posters with an almost airbrush like quality that mix flat, 2D elements with painterly ones.

Self-Portrait_017

Proof of concept/rough attempt at the style. I just needed to get the concept out of my head and actually look at it. I think it has legs.

Obviously, there’s a lot wrong with the image, but that’s okay; it’s a first attempt. It’s totally open to critique if you have some.

This is awesome! Different is right. This is my favorite piece since Earthworm Jim

I think it is looking awesome but you will benefit a lot from a book like one of the Hogarths. For example:

Because while working from a reference photo makes things easier, really drawing from a basic construction will help solidify your masses. Just do it over and over!

I’ve got a bunch of Bridgman books to mull over. I have a couple of Hogarth, but not that one. I’m practicing as often as I can; I really want to improve on this front.

Nicely done rendering of a difficult angle of a head. Is this ink wash? I do wonder about the cartoony yellow lightning bolt…it doesn’t correlate with the rest of the picture. Keep at it!
