I recently emailed Kyle at EZ to ask him questions about his separations for screen printing as I am an artist, own a clothing brand and work at a screen shop but he hasn’t gotten back with me just yet on the one question. I notice you color behind your black lines layer which keeps everything clean but as soon as you turn off your top/line layer, its very dirty..which is a given but my question is, how do you personally separate colors for screens to get clean lines. I know in similar situations I use Color Select in Photoshop and print from the channels and sometimes you can use a color seps programs but this doesn’t always work for work that is more…detailed with highlights and halftones, appose to your very clean illustration here. Any help would be great!

I purposely set the layers to 1bit, not 2. This helps make for easy color separations for the screen printing of my images. Setting it to two colors per layer would just clutter things up.

Manga Studio 4 does 32-bit, full color layers now.

You mention in your vid that you are limited to one colour per layer, but that is not so. Manga Studio allows you to set alternate colours for black and white. Black can be red and white can be blue. And if you set transparansy to visible, you can have three colours, though I think that would limit you to one layer. Not sure, colour, to me, is a Photoshop thing.

Long time searching for a long video like this
I like seeing the hole process its quite interesting and i have learn quite a lot.
I think i am gonna start using Manga Studio cus i cant do that kind of strokes in PS for inking and Illustrator takes a whole of time for inking…

I actually only discovered Burns recently. My inspiration comes largely from the EC and Harris books of old. I’ve got a 24″ iMac and the Cintiq 20WSX.

Widescreen is great You can put all your palettes to either side and work in the middle.

Hey, Ray — Great work. I can tell you’re a Charles Burns fan like me. What brand and size of monitor are you using? I’m almost done pricing out a new custom built system and it’s my last hold out. I want the best I can afford – around $500 max. I’m hearing some comments about the widescreen being wasted space. Not clear on whether this is a concern or not. Thanks

Ray, Iv’e been lurking around your site for a bit and you have some really inspiring work. Thanks for putting this stuff out there to help us all become better designers.

Also, you may already know, but coroflot is the child of the industrial/product design website Core77.com which has been around for over a decade. So the name does have some real world meaning.

Like your work on what I seen so far. I’m into the skull concept most of the time for my company that need alot of work. How much do you normally charge for a design for a shirt with colors and fonts? have ask gain cause i duno were i posted the first comment lol so u use manga studio ? for all this work?is it of for liek to post work from it to threadless it works as vector tool? or u ave to convert am just amazed how the sensitivity of the lines are and u saying it can handle lots of dpi without being sluggish and also illustrator is nice yet hard to use and sluggish kinda so ,,, anyway great video great work,,,
