Electric Zombie Tee and Video

Posted March 13th, 2008 in Illustration, Video.

Thanks to Vimeo, I have a really easy way to post some of the longer videos that I’ve had sitting around. One such video is nearly two hours long and offers real time narration throughout. I’ve posted some of my digital pencilling and inking before. Here, I speak at length on my coloring as well.

Before the video, however, come the pretty pictures!

Hi Ray, thanks for that! It’s great to see someone actually sharing high quality tutorials like these. I am indebted to you. Cheers!

I think you turn more people to Manga Studio than the company that produce the software ever could. They should send you t-shirts, money, and, I don’t know, virgins.

Thanks, guys. I should be on staff – are you listening Smith Micro?

hi Ray, love your work. You are a true inspiration!
I have a question: i never used manga studio, but can you export to vector with it? if not how do you convert it?

Ray Frenden
Mar 20th, 2008 #

Thanks!

Manga Studio doesn’t export as a vector as of version 3. Version 4 may do things a little different from what I understand.

It does, however, work easily at ridiculously high dpi. Most of my work is around 11″ x 17″ @ 1200 dpi. I export every spot color as black and then auto-trace it.

Amazing stuff man! I might have to check out that Manga Studio program.

wow. AMAZING, but lengthy video! i really appreciate you doing this! not only for the wealth of information, but it’s just really cool to see someone work, in my opinion. it’s also nice to see someone who pays so much attention to detail in their work. it gives me a little hope for my own perfectionism. i’m also very curious to see what kind of input device you are using. the clicking sound in the video and it makes me think you’re using a mouse… you can’t possibly be drawing those lines with a mouse, right? glad to hear you are doing well for yourself, you deserve it! keep up the great work!

so… i guess i should have watched your other videos first; then i would have known you’re using a tablet. i guess not all tablets click the same.

Ray Frenden
Mar 21st, 2008 #

That clicking is the express keys, not the pen. :)

Should probably put together a FAQ section, ’cause everyone (including me) who comes here eventually asks what you’re using as far as software and input method goes. I, for one, welcome our Manga Studio EX overlords…

The video has been seen 14,000 times. I’m officially inundated with “what software/tablet” requests. :p

Saw this linked on Drawn! and am just blown away by your technique and style.

Thanks for making me want to use Manga Studio again — yes, I’m another Mac user that got the “Leopard” burn for using Manga Studio on the Mac. Fortunately, the Debut version of MS works okay on os X 10.5.x.

Stretching every 10 minutes? You’ve been reading some strange ergonomic information! :) I think what is recommended is 5 minute break every hour.
It also helps your eyes if you have a distant spot to look at from time to time.

I’m wondering on the size of your tablet.
I’ve tried an A6 sized one and felt it too small for my likings.
Is yours A4 or bigger?

GC
Mar 25th, 2008 #

…there’s another good question to add to the FAQ… LOL!

Miguel

Did Ray mention the tablet size on the video? I didn’t watch every minute of it.
If someone knows the answer you’re welcome to share it.

i’m a lil curious about your software choices.

what are you using now (manga studio?) and what have you used and what do you think stands out these days?

my issues have always been brushes, is this a major concern as a semi-digital illustrator?

GC
Mar 27th, 2008 #

Manga Studio EX.

Ray turned me on to that software, and it’s been fantastic at simulating brush, pen and pencil strokes… best I’ve seen. Much faster and cleaner than Illustrator, Painter and Expression3 X (or any other program you choose to pit it against).

BTW, here’s a new one I just got into the running at Threadless using Manga Studio EX also. This illustration took very little time and was as clean as drawing on paper.

Not to be too annoying here, but have you seen what Glennz is doing now? You should do the same thing Ray. I think if you took votes on your best designs before submitting to Threadless, you could sell direct and make a nicer profit and retain the rights to your designs. As a matter of fact, I’d love it if all the top Threadless designers could form a new network and sell direct to the public…. hmm… you guys will need a rep for this. ;)

Hey Ray,
Nice work!
Do you usually create sketches entirely in the computer or sometimes traditional pencil?
Very fascinating!…

Like your work on what I seen so far. I’m into the skull concept most of the time for my company that need alot of work. I plan to to ask you in the near future to create me a design to try to get some reconition for my site in t shirt designs for me. How much do you normally charge for a design for a shirt with colors and fonts? My company name is called Thug Ink Productions but from what I got on the site so far you wouldn’t know from the name and that’s a problem that I want to correct. Can you help me out and hope to hear from you soon.Thanks.

Ray, Iv’e been lurking around your site for a bit and you have some really inspiring work. Thanks for putting this stuff out there to help us all become better designers.

Also, you may already know, but coroflot is the child of the industrial/product design website Core77.com which has been around for over a decade. So the name does have some real world meaning.

Thanks again for what you do.

Hey, Ray — Great work. I can tell you’re a Charles Burns fan like me. What brand and size of monitor are you using? I’m almost done pricing out a new custom built system and it’s my last hold out. I want the best I can afford – around $500 max. I’m hearing some comments about the widescreen being wasted space. Not clear on whether this is a concern or not. Thanks

Ray Frenden

I actually only discovered Burns recently. My inspiration comes largely from the EC and Harris books of old. I’ve got a 24″ iMac and the Cintiq 20WSX.

Widescreen is great You can put all your palettes to either side and work in the middle.

You mention in your vid that you are limited to one colour per layer, but that is not so. Manga Studio allows you to set alternate colours for black and white. Black can be red and white can be blue. And if you set transparansy to visible, you can have three colours, though I think that would limit you to one layer. Not sure, colour, to me, is a Photoshop thing.

FRENDEN

I purposely set the layers to 1bit, not 2. This helps make for easy color separations for the screen printing of my images. Setting it to two colors per layer would just clutter things up.

Manga Studio 4 does 32-bit, full color layers now.
